اسم "الأكام" مأخوذ من اللغة العربية الفُصحى، وهو جمع آكمَة التي تشير إلى الرابية الصغيرة أو التلة المستديرة التي تعلو ما حولها من الأرض، لكنها ليست بارتفاع الجبال ولا بطولها، تلال صغيرة متناثرة في الأرض.
